Body mass index (BMI) is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.
BMI does not measure body fat directly, but BMI is moderately correlated with more direct measures of body fat. Furthermore, BMI appears to be as strongly correlated with various metabolic and disease outcome as are these more direct measures of body fat.
Normal BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight is defined as having BMI of 25 to 29.9
A BMI equal or greater than 30 is considered obese
The more you weigh the harder your heart has to work to give your body nutrients. Research has shown that being overweight contributes to the onset of diabetes, heart disease, elevated blood cholesterol/triglycerides and high blood pressure. The goal is to have a daily good diet and exercise plan.
